3 tips to stop fireworks ruining your child’s sleep

Are you after some tips to stop fireworks ruining your child’s sleep? Take heed, you’re not alone. All that loud noise can be irritating!

If you already have older children and you’re not out celebrating with fireworks yourself, you may know that staying home amongst the constant bangs and booms can lead to a LONG night of little to no sleep.  There’s nothing worse than staying home and listening to what can only be compared to the sound of a world war; especially when it’s happening right outside your child’s bedroom window! If this is your first child, then it also pays to be prepared.

Here are three tips to help your children sleep through fireworks:

1. PUT YOUR CHILD TO BED BEFORE THE FIREWORKS BEGIN

Unless you have ‘those’ neighbours who set their fireworks off while it’s still light outside, putting your baby or child to bed at their usual time (BEFORE it gets dark) will mean a better start to the night. Your child is more likely to be in a deep sleep by the time the fireworks start, and will be less likely to wake when the ensuing chaos starts.

2. DROWN OUT THE SOUND

Use a white noise machine, a fan, the radio on static, vacuum cleaner, or gentle music to help drown out the sound of the fireworks. Use all at once if need be (o.k., maybe not ALL). If you don’t normally use white noise in your child’s room, keep the level low at bedtime and turn it up when they’re asleep. Keep it on all night too.

3. OFFER COMFORT TO A DISTRESSED CHILD

If your child wakes up scared offer comfort and reassurance, then do what you can to help them back to sleep. Don’t worry about your behaviour turning into a sleep prop because of just one or two nights. If your child needs an extra cuddle, or for you to be nearby because they’re frightened or upset  –  so be it.

Oh, if you are out celebrating with fireworks, don’t forget to protect your little ones ears! Banz earmuffs have you covered if you were wondering how. And if sleep is eluding someone in your family, even without the fireworks, please make contact! Chances are it doesn’t have to be that way and the change could be more simple than you think!
